Whether a 1-3 day workshop or longer, I will work with you to customize lessons that connect your target subject, standards, and/or theme to dance. For example, telling the stories of Dr. Seuss through jazz dance, exploring identity through contemporary dance and choreography, traveling into space with ballet and modern dance, or learning about the wind through poetry and creative movement! I design activities to be engaging and flexible for learners of varying levels, founded on the basic elements of dance (Body, Energy, Space, Time, & Movement); and work with students to create an atmosphere of fun and mutual respect. Including a culminating performance (formal/informal) is an optional way to further add to the learning experience. Integrating dance with academic learning (literacy, science, math, social studies) and social emotional learning (self-management, self & social awareness, responsible decision making, and relationship skills) allows for a complete and meaningful learning experience for students.
One of my favorite things to do with students is to bring stories and poems to life through dance! Using literature allows for fun connections to any number of subjects while increasing students' literacy, critical thinking, empathy, and discussion skills. Examples include...
For Teachers/Leaders...I believe residencies should have a lasting impact on your group, with teachers/leaders ideally feeling equipped and comfortable to continue incorporating movement into learning. During the residency, I encourage teachers to be as involved as they feel possible in the activities (which engages students even more!), and can offer professional development sessions specific to dance integration. After the residency, I like to provide items such as:
